Services
I work nearly full-time as a programmer and IT technician for a local company, and I also engage in other business interests. This means that I am currently unavailable for freelance work.
What I was up to earlier...
Writing and editing
I spent 16 years in computer magazine publishing as a writer and editor. I wrote a monthly technical help column for over 100 issues of Future Publishing's PC Plus.
Web design
Small to medium-size sites such as these recent examples:
- Bath Go Club A simple four-page brochure site.
- Luxartis Fine Art Products. This is a basic e-commerce system for a specialist company selling sable watercolour brushes. The site uses a MySQL database and PHP server-side scripting to generate the product gallery. It works in conjunction with a third-party shopping cart and checkout.
- Luxartis Gallery A more complex site for an artist selling framed botanical and other artworks online. PHP scripting and a MySQL database were used to build a product gallery featuring on-the-fly generation of images simulating framed artworks, a shopping cart linked to a payment service provider (PayPal IPN) and stock level management. These elements are highly integrated and tailored in a way that would be difficult or impossible with an off-the-peg e-commerce solution.
Programming
Small to medium-size projects.
Fluent in VB, VBA (MS Office automation), C/C++ and PHP, the Downloads section on this site contains many examples. I have a working knowledge of JavaScript and 80x86 Assembler, plus familiarity with a variety of other languages.
